![]() Joining up with Kerbal Space Program has been part of this. ![]() “With over 4 million people watching the last launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis and 3.2 million watching the landing of Mars Curiosity rover through various digital outlets, I’d say interest and desire has never been higher." Why astronauts play space games “As we continue to become more connected through social media, public ignorance of public and private space exploration missions has shrunk” says David Lantz, a flight controller directly inside Nasa’s mission control. Using sites like Facebook, Twitter and its own Nasa TV digital channel, it is building connections with the younger generation, explaining its projects, posting videos and live streams and designing interactive applications around its satellite and Mars Rover initiatives. The sim allows you to build a variety of spacecraft, from rockets to satellites. Reaching for the stars should be the next step for us as a species, especially as we’re so obviously exceeding the current resources the Earth has to offer.” “I think it’s a shame,” says Falanghe, “not just for Nasa but for mankind in general, that there isn’t as much interest in space exploration these days as there should be. Of that, just $89m is allocated to educating the next generation of astronauts, scientists and engineers. In truth, Nasa has requested a budget of $17.5bn for fiscal 2015. As recently as 1997, the public estimated that up to 20% of government budget was allocated to Nasa – a $328bn injection that would almost certainly have meant a successful manned Mars mission by now. The American public doesn’t just lack understanding about what Nasa undertakes, it also grossly overestimates the budget it receives from the US government. The public relations boom of the moon landings and the 1980s shuttle programme has long faded, and amid a biting recession, there is apathy and misunderstanding about the organisation. For us, it was a great learning experience – none of us in the team have any formal background in aerospace or any related field.” Public relations for space travelįor Nasa, there was another motive. “When we first started, we had very little help from experts, save what we could research on our own. “It’s been a truly amazing experience,” says Falanghe. Players can now experiment with a genuine space programme, using Nasa rocket parts. In March 2013, Squad received an intriguing tweet: “Interested in exploring an asteroid with us?” It was from Nasa, and after a year of cooperation, the Kerbal team was able to implement the real-life Asteroid Redirect Mission into its game. The success of the game hadn’t gone unnoticed. “It’s about exploring and reaching out to something that was a complete unknown not too long ago.” “It’s about how you can improve the design so it doesn’t happen again” he says. “It’s about seeing your creations explode and trying to figure out why,” he says. Felipe Falanghe, Kerbal’s creator and lead developer at Squad, has perhaps been surprised by the success of the title, but understands its appeal. Users began modifying the code and adding new features, and when it was released onto leading PC games platform Steam in spring 2013, it became one of the top five best-selling titles on the site’s “early access” section – a huge new audience joined the experiment. The community rises, Nasa noticesĪnd as with Minecraft, a community quickly grew around Kerbal, despite its unfinished state. It's no wonder people are calling this Minecraft in space – it has that same sense of creativity and possibility. The possibilities for construction are almost endless, and the most experienced players are able to dock craft in orbit to create space stations, land on the nearby moon, and venture into deep space. "Okay, where does the spoiler go?" It was discovered in 1901, in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, and has been dated to c. The Antikythera mechanism, a type of device used to determine the positions of heavenly bodies known as an orrery, was described as an early mechanical analog computer by British physicist, information scientist, and historian of science Derek J. The Antikythera mechanism, dating between 150 and 100 BC, was an early analog computer. Some of them may even have been dubbed 'computers' by the press, though they may fail to fit modern definitions. This is a list of examples of early computation devices considered precursors of the modern computers. See also: Timeline of computing hardware before 1950 More complex applications, such as aircraft flight simulators and synthetic-aperture radar, remained the domain of analog computing (and hybrid computing) well into the 1980s, since digital computers were insufficient for the task. Perhaps the most relatable example of analog computers are mechanical watches where the continuous and periodic rotation of interlinked gears drives the second, minute and hour needles in the clock. Complex mechanisms for process control and protective relays used analog computation to perform control and protective functions.Īnalog computers were widely used in scientific and industrial applications even after the advent of digital computers, because at the time they were typically much faster, but they started to become obsolete as early as the 1950s and 1960s, although they remained in use in some specific applications, such as aircraft flight simulators, the flight computer in aircraft, and for teaching control systems in universities. Slide rules and nomograms are the simplest, while naval gunfire control computers and large hybrid digital/analog computers were among the most complicated. In contrast, digital computers represent varying quantities symbolically and by discrete values of both time and amplitude ( digital signals).Īnalog computers can have a very wide range of complexity. You can further minimize the risks by cutting the middle-man out, i.e., and use local synchronization via USB, FTP/SFTP, SyncThing, etc and still get your devices to sync your KeePass database (multiple databases if you want to). This is in my opinion, a safer option than relying on a cloud-based system such as one employed by Bitwarden. Even if the first one is possible, the chances of the second are pretty slim. ![]() This essentially provides a double-layer of security, so a hacker would first need access to your cloud storage's server, and then has to bypass your database's master password. To sync the database between your computer and your phone, all you have to do is save the database file in a cloud storage service's folder, like your Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc, or your self-hosted server. Since it is an offline tool, you don't need to create an account to start using it, you just set up your database using the official desktop program on your computer, or by using one of the unofficial (and open source) mobile apps. Instead, it has a ton of forks, some of which are recognized by the developer, which you can take as a sign that they're considered to be safe until proven otherwise. This is KeePass' biggest issue, it does not have an official mobile app. What if I want to access my KeePass database on my mobile devices. You have to take care of all the protecting on the other hand. Your database is encrypted offline and stays secure if you use a strong password, and this is its strong point. KeePass on the other hand doesn't rely on internet to work. Successful attackers won't have direct access to a user's stored passwords and other data as a consequence. Update: the data that is transferred between user devices and Bitwarden's server is end-to-end encrypted. I'm not saying it could be, but in the event the server gets compromised, it could impact your accounts. With Bitwarden, unless you are self-hosting the server (really, how many are going to?), you're essentially saving your passwords on the company's servers. And I confess to betraying KeePass in favor of LastPass' mobile app (autofill is a lifesaver on small screens) for a couple of years, before learning about KeePass' mobile forks and returning to it. It is after all what attracted users to LastPass in the first place, cross-device syncing. This right here is in my opinion why users want to use the service. To use it on your other devices, download the app on your phone or the browser add-on or the desktop program, and you're good to go. You have to sign up for a Bitwarden account on PC or browser or the mobile app, import your passwords to it. Which one will you choose? KeePass or Bitwarden?īitwarden's strength is the availability of official apps, and ready-to-use cloud-based, cross-device synchronization. Many people aren't aware of the various mobile apps that you can use to complement KeePass, more on this later. They look at it as an open source password manager for computers, right? That's the issue. When people think about KeePass, I believe they don't consider it as a cross-platform program, or capable of cloud-based synchronization. Some of you maybe confused by which one to go with? The majority of users seem to be flocking towards Bitwarden or KeePass. The more important thing here is your choice, what is a good alternative for LastPass? Which one are you moving to? I've been intrigued by comments across social media, reddit, and of course right here at the blog. And by doing so, they're getting rid of a large chunk of server load and possibly saving resources which would have otherwise been used for customer support, this could prove to be a profitable move for LastPass.Īnyway, let's not discuss that. From a business' point of view, they're offloading the free users while likely retaining their premium customers. Many users have hit out at the company on social media, and some believe that it might have dug its own grave with this decision. I wish Windows did this by default, but then again there are lots of features that are missing. The System Font Size menu is just a shortcut for other programs made by the developer, you can ignore it as well.ĭesktop Icon Spacing is a portable program, though I would say it is not truly portable as it temporarily modifies the registry. The Theme menu, well it's not a menu, it's just a button that switches the interface to a Dark Theme. Click on the "Save generic restore file" to save a copy of the Registry key, and use it to restore the default values. ![]() You may also find the next option helpful. Can't I just set the values to 75 as mentioned earlier? You can, the restore option is like a Plan B, which can be handy if the manual restoration failed. Desktop Icon Spacing modifies a Windows Registry key that is called WindowsMetric, to apply the changes that you select. That may sound confusing, here's an explanation. This isn't required, but if you want to revert to the original settings manually, click on the option that says "Restore WindowsMetric and Restart PC". So, when you reboot your computer, the original settings are restored automatically. The first option, make default, saves the Desktop Icon Spacing permanently, this isn't enabled by default. ![]() The Advanced menu has a couple of interesting options. Desktop Icon Spacing will exit Explorer windows automatically, but to be on the safer side, I recommend saving your work before proceeding to prevent loss of unsaved documents/browser sessions. Note: The "All Windows" setting only affects Windows Explorer, i.e. Hit the apply button in the top left corner of the window, and you should see your desktop refresh for a second or two after which the new spacing settings take effect. Check the two boxes at the bottom of the window, the options which are labeled All Data Saved, and All Windows Closed. You can crank it up for spacing the icons out, or turn it out down to scrunch them together, which will allow you room for even more shortcuts.Īdjust the slider as required, say 90 for the horizontal setting. The default value is 75 for both settings. The GUI has 2 sliders named Horizontal and Vertical (it's like X-axis and Y-axis on an imaginary grid), which represent the space between two icons in terms of pixels. The interface is pretty simple, and has a few tabs at the top. Run the program, the executable is called Iconspacing.exe. ![]() This may sound simple, but will not only help arrange your icons more neatly, but also minimizes accidental clicks on nearby icons. All you can do is change the icon size, whether to auto arrange them and toggle the icon visibility.ĭesktop Icon Spacing is a freeware tool that allows you to modify the space between two icons. Windows barely lets you change the icon settings. ![]() Now, what about customizing the icons? I'm not talking about changing the icon itself, rather the options for displaying them. Most computers I've come across have icons covering the entire left half of the screen, and I ask them how do you even know what's where? My friends always tell me my desktop is the neatest that they've ever seen. I got into the habit after using Fences for a couple of years, and ditching it.
